1.
Just how should I interpret your neglect?

There are no letters that I ever see,

so have you been persuaded to reject

my overtures without civility?

2.
How long am I to sit with patient pride

beyond that vestibule of paradise?

Were flowers known to win you, far and wide,

I'd skim the sky for cloud-plucked eidelweiss.

3.

Require me not to wait the postman's knock

with mounting fear your promises will fail.

I've made an enemy of every clock

which strikes the hour to indicate no mail!

4.
Or do you dance as if to cast your veil,

while knowing well that it be knotted tight?

If this be so, then let my plea prevail

to taunt not thus with hope my appetite.

5.
But if it's your intention to invite,

(and not as I'm supposing now, to mock,)

then shed your hesitation with the night,

and write to say the door will be unlocked.

6.
If now at last, you'll fill that postman's sack,

how eagerly I'll wait the flush of dawn.

I'll fetch your summons from the letter-rack,

and watch that shield of distance be withdrawn.
